How to Import Data

You can import data into any Space loaded in your 3D Workspace. The process is facilitated by a data import wizard*.* To initiate the import process, first, select the target space, then open the Local Explorer [Deprecated in 2025.1] and select the Import Data button, located in the bottom left corner.

This button in the Local Explorer triggers the data import wizard.

This will open the data import wizard which will guide you through the import process for various types of data. Presently, LiquidEarth supports the import of surface meshes in the following formats:

Additional formats and data types like boreholes and volumes are in the pipeline for future updates.

The Data Import Wizard guides you through the steps for importing different data types and formats.

Once you have selected the data type for import, follow the detailed steps outlined by the wizard. After finalizing this procedure, your data will be loaded into the chosen space. This process could either be instantaneous or take a while, depending on the size of the data. A related message will pop up in the Activity Feed and the loading bar will display the import progress. Note that post-import, the extent of the space will adjust to encompass the extent of the imported data.

With your data now loaded, LiquidEarth provides a range of tools for you to visualize and interact with it **(see Visualization & Basic Interactions and Advanced Interactions).

2025.1 Updates

Beginning with LiquidEarth version 2025.1, uploading and importing data works as follows:

  1. Select and expand the space where you want to import data, then click Add Content to Space at the bottom of the data list.
  2. Click Upload to open a pop-up window, allowing you to select files for upload using the file browser or by dragging and dropping files into the highlighted section.
  3. Once the files are selected, click Upload to store them in the cloud. These files will be associated with the selected space but will not yet be imported. They will appear under Uploaded Files in the space list (explorer).
  4. After uploading, click Import in the Explorer to open the data import wizard. The wizard will guide you through the steps for importing various supported data types.
  5. Follow the instructions provided in the wizard to configure the import process. At this stage, you can reference the previously uploaded data for importing.
  6. Complete the process by clicking the Import button to finalize the data import into the space.

Note: The steps required to import data using the wizard may vary in complexity depending on the data type. For example, importing borehole data requires the use of custom parsers in the wizard. Detailed guidelines for implementing these parsers will be added to the documentation soon.

Note: Currently, the import system for OBJ files still uses the old process, requiring direct upload via the import wizard. This functionality will soon transition to the new system described above.
